40 Days of Dating : An Experiment

Boy meets girl. Boy likes girl. Boy and girl become best friends who date each other as a social experiment. This is not your typical love story, but it is the one of Timothy Goodman and Jessica Walsh. The two something graphic designers living in New York created the blog, 40 Days of Dating. Throughout their friendship, Goodman and Walsh bonded over their relationship problems. As explained on their blog Walsh is a self-proclaimed hopeless romantic, who falls into serious relationships too quickly. Goodman likes to play the field, preferring to casually date many women. This sparked the idea for their social experiment to see if the dating myth is true: Can two people with opposite dating styles make it work as a couple? They then created a blog after the experiment and published their journal entries side by side for all 40 days, illustrated in a unique way with graphic design.

My solutions have sometimes been errant and often unproductive, but—thanks to 40 Days of Dating —I now know never to opt to launch into a full-scale committed relationship with the most readily available man I can snag. Because that would be desperate. This word is often misapplied to women who are actively searching for Mr.

What ’40 Days of Dating‘ Got Right About Millennial Relationships. Truthfully, I am quite nervous. However, I know that when an opportunity scares me, I must go.

When good friends Tim and Jessie were both single at the same time and lamenting their own bad habits when it came it to relationships they came up with the brain child of 40 Days of Dating. Their experiment had very basic ground rules: they had to see each other every day, they had to fill out a questionnaire every day to document their experiment, they had to go to couple’s therapy once a week, and they had to go on a weekend trip together at some point during the 40 days.

After the experiment, while reviewing some of their questionnaire responses, Tim and Jessie realized that the results were worth sharing and they turned the project into a blog which quickly went viral and resulted in, amongst other things, this book. This was a fascinating social experiment to read. Due to the layout of the questionnaires it’s really fascinating to get a literal he said, she said about each day of the project and to see how two people can perceive the same scenarios.

Seeing how two people who already know each other well and are aware of their own and their partner’s own relationship bad habits made for some really interesting read. The book also includes journal entries from Tim and Jessie after the project ended and it was wonderful to get some further insight into their relationship post-experiment. As Goodman and Walsh are both designers, the book itself is also a gorgeous object on its own. Here at Walmart.

The couple agreed to see each other every day for 40 days and go on at least three dates a week. They also had to see a couples therapist once a week and take one weekend trip together.

Any addicts of the 40 Days of Dating project know that the big reveal happens this week: Are Jessica and Timothy still together? On their Disney.

Their solution to the question? Date each other for forty days. Both Jessica and Timothy have self-professed relationship issues—him with commitment issues and her with over-commitment issues—and both have found themselves single. The plan is to jump into a full-scale committed relationship, go to couples therapy, and complete a survey at the end of each of the forty days.

To me, however, it seemed like 40 Days of Dating was less like an experiment and more like a train wreck where nobody could look away. But everyone learns from mistakes—even when they seem to be made intentionally. So to say that I learned nothing from 40 Days of Dating would be a lie. Here’s what I took away from the ordeal, despite itself.
